Do you remember? "Max Payne"
by Philipp Rüegg
Rockstar and Remedy are working together on remakes of the first two "Max Payne" parts.
Remedy has surprisingly announced that they are working on remakes of "Max Payne" and "Max Payne 2". Surprising, because the last part "Max Payne 3" was developed by Rockstar. The "GTA" makers secured the trademark rights in 2002 and developed part three. The first two parts, on the other hand, came from the Finnish game studio Remedy. Rockstar was the publisher and took care of the marketing. This collaboration is now being resumed.
"We were thrilled when our longtime friends at Remedy contacted us about remaking the original Max Payne games," said Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games. "We're big fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years, and we can't wait to play these new versions." When that will be is still unknown.
They are still in a very early stage of development, the statement said. There were almost no details, except that they will be real remakes and not remasters. The games will be developed from scratch for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X and will not just get a new coat of paint. The studio is relying on the Northlight Game Engine, which was already used for "Control". The development is financed by Rockstar and the budget is in line with a typical Remedy AAA game.
"Max Payne" was one of the most groundbreaking action games of its time. In 2001, it created the same wow effect among gamers as "Matrix" did in the cinema three years earlier. Spectacular slow-motion action, a dark film-noir story, and of course Max Payne as the iconic hero. I've already expressed my enthusiasm for the first two parts.
Are you looking forward to the remakes? Or would you rather have seen part three remade or a completely new part right away? Write it in the comment column.
Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
