PS5 update brings Discord Voice Chat, VRR for 1440p and more

Sony has released system update 7 for Playstation 5 worldwide. This enables Discord voice calls with the console. Other new features include VRR for 1440p.
In July 2022, Microsoft brought Discord Voice Chat to the Xbox. Sony is now following suit and integrating it into Playstation 5, allowing users of PS5, Xbox, smartphones and PCs to communicate directly. This should particularly please fans of cross-play games. However, using the function is a little less simple than with the voice chat party already available on the PS5.
After linking your Discord account to your Playstation account, you cannot join - or create - a voice chat directly from the console. This is done in the smartphone app or on the PC - from there the call is transferred to the console. Functions other than voice calls are currently not possible.

If you use your PS5 on a screen with 1440p resolution, you can only do so if the device is supported by Sony. This support has now been extended to more devices. You can test whether your device is supported in the video output settings under "Test 1440p output". From this system version onwards, it is also possible to play back 1440p with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) - which makes for smoother gameplay. However, VRR requires an HDMI 2.1 connection.
Updating the DualSense controller has been simplified. The process is now possible wirelessly without a cable. Accessing PS4 game saves when playing on PS5 and transferring data between two PS5 consoles is also easier. The screen reader has also been improved. Last but not least, there is a new "Friends who play" tile, a new "Join game" icon in party chats and the option to manually upload recordings to the Playstation app.
