PopSockets: a plastic gizmo for smartphones

There are plastic gizmos that you could just throw away. And then there's PopSocket, which can be used for lots of things and adds a real plus to your smartphone.

Since I got one, I've lost count of the number of passers-by in the street who accost me to ask what that round "Made in China" thingy attached to the back of my smartphone is for.

I received my PopSocket at a press conference three years ago. At first, I thought it was one of those cheap advertising gadgets that end up in the bin. But I gave this self-adhesive mobile phone holder a chance. And it's brilliant I have to say. My PopSocket has gone through three phone changes.

Let me tell you the story from the beginning, I think it's necessary. There's one thing I can already tell you: you absolutely need one, but you may not know it yet. Neither did I at the time.

Large smartphone, small hands

I'm about 1.50m tall. My knuckles have got used to this little gizmo. As mobile phone screens get bigger, I find it harder and harder to use them with one hand. That's where the PopSocket comes in. Thanks to it, my smartphone stays firmly in place. Other advantages? It allows me to make videos and take photos with ease. It's true that I could totally buy a smaller phone, but their performance isn't good enough for me.

And when you want to have a little cinema session in the sack, this thing is a real blessing. Do you also watch a few videos in bed now and then before bed? I do, yes. But holding the smartphone often gives me cramps. What's more, it sometimes falls on my face. To remedy this, I slide my fingers on either side of the holder, and the phone stays firmly in place.

A phone in place of a TV

Once deployed, the PopSocket lets you put your smartphone on a shelf to indulge in Netflix and co. And on the train? That's pretty cool too.

YouTube videos are so much more fun to watch with.

The PopSocket lets you position your smartphone however you want to watch a video.

Ah yes, I almost forgot, you can wrap the headphone cord around it. Any questions?

I admit that for those who carry the smartphone in their trouser pocket, it's not practical. On the plus side, there's a counterpart to the PopSocket that performs the same functions and attaches in your car.

And if you still think you don't need it, then there's nothing I can do for you. But you'll think of me the next time your smartphone crashes its full weight into your face as you lie in bed.

And if you still think you don't need it, then I can't help you.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
