The Suunto Vertical 2 should score with top battery life and a bright display
by Siri Schubert
With the new "ScanWatch 2" in Midnight Blue, Withings is updating its hybrid watch with "HealthSense 4": a software update that makes sleep, heart and temperature measurement more precise. Visually, everything remains classic, but technically it is noticeably smarter.
If you want to keep a constant eye on your health without being too preoccupied with technology, the new «ScanWatch 2» from Withings in Midnight Blue might be something for you. With a diameter of 42 millimetres, it combines classic design with modern sensor technology and a software update that improves health analysis. It will be available in our shop from 13 October.
The «ScanWatch 2» relies on proven technology: a round stainless steel case with sapphire crystal, a 0.63-inch OLED display and a weight of 52.6 grammes. It is water-resistant to five ATM, offers GPS tracking and achieves a battery life of up to 35 days - around five days more than before.
The real innovation lies in the operating system. With «HealthSense 4», Withings introduces a platform that analyses 35 health parameters, including sleep quality, respiratory rate, body temperature, heart rate variability and cycle data. The watch recognises patterns, alerts you to abnormalities and gives you tips on how to improve your energy levels and recovery.
A key new feature is the vitality indicator. It combines measured values such as heart rate variability, temperature curves, activity and sleep quality to provide an overall picture of your energy levels. For example, the watch recognises when your REM sleep has been disturbed, your variability drops or temperature patterns indicate an impending illness.
This function is part of the paid service «Withings+» and requires a plan after a three-month trial period. The basic functions of the watch - i.e. measurements such as heart rate, steps, sleep or temperature - remain unaffected. Only the extended analysis, such as the vitality indicator or personalised health recommendations, is subject to a charge.
In addition to new analysis functions, Withings has also revised the ECG function. The watch can now recognise eight classifications of irregular heart rhythms and informs you when abnormalities occur. Optionally, you can have a manual ECG written at any time.
At the same time, the accuracy of breathing, temperature and sleep analysis has been improved. Sleep mode recognises stable rest phases more reliably and automatic activity recognition reacts more sensitively to changes in movement.
Withings is also gradually distributing the «HealthSense 4» update to existing «ScanWatch 2» models. This does not include the cheaper «ScanWatch Light», which does not have a temperature sensor and therefore does not have all the new functions
