A telephoto lens with a focal length of 70-180 millimetres and a super telephoto lens with 180-600 millimetres extend Nikon's range of lenses.

It can happen that quickly: A fortnight ago, I wrote in my test on the Nikon Z 8 that Nikon doesn't have a supertele for the Z system under 2000 francs or euros. Now the manufacturer is announcing such a lens. It is expected to be available from the end of August 2023.

Supertele: 180-600mm

Nikon's latest addition, with a focal length of 180-600 millimetres, corresponds almost exactly to the popular 200-600mm lens from Sony. It can be used to photograph birds and other smaller animals. It is also suitable for sports photography from a distance.

The lens speed of f/5.6-6.3 is identical for both lenses. The weight also hardly differs, at around two kilograms.

According to Nikon, the focus motor is extremely quiet. This is particularly important for video recordings. The integrated image stabiliser compensates for up to 5.5 exposure stops. The closest focusing distance is 1.3 metres at the shortest focal length and 2.4 metres at the longest focal length.

The 180-600 mm lens is compatible with Nikon teleconverters, allowing the focal length to be extended to 840 and 1200 millimetres respectively. A seal protects against dust and water droplets.

Universal lens: 70-180mm

At the same time, Nikon is launching a telephoto lens with a focal length of 70-180 millimetres and a lens speed of f/2.8. It is a cheaper alternative to the existing 70-200mm with the same speed.

In a direct comparison, the lower weight is particularly noticeable: 795 grams compared to 1430 grams for the 70-200mm lens. With the shortest focal length, you can also get much closer: the closest focusing distance is 27 centimetres and the maximum magnification is 1:2.1. The 70-200 focuses from 50 cm, which results in a magnification of 1:5. <p
