"Mortal Kombat 11": Every doctor's (nightmare) dream

Even bloodier, trashy story and lots of outlandish fatalities. Patrik and I are going at it in "Mortal Kombat 11" until the shreds literally fly. The stream starts at 11am.

Since Scorpion turned his opponent into a charred skeleton with a fireball for the first time in 1992 and a sinister voice called out "Fatality", "Mortal Kombat" has had a cult following. But it wasn't just the blood and explicit violence that attracted gamers worldwide. The iconic fighters such as Kano or Sub Zero and the fast and satisfying gameplay ensured long-term motivation.

"Mortal Kombat 11" continues the fighting story. It once again offers a completely abstruse but entertaining story in which you play with different fighters. There are also the traditional towers to climb, where you have to prevail against ever stronger opponents. In "Classic Towers" you unlock the characters' endings. In "Towers of Time" you have to master various challenges, which are often associated with modifications. For example, you fight against opponents with twice as many health points as you. This is where consumables come into play, which you unlock by playing. Consumables are used in single-player mode to give you decisive advantages, such as more damage or resistance to ice.

Of course, you can also compete against human players - either locally or online. To make sure you don't wipe the floor with them, you can practise specific combos and attack techniques in training mode.

Until the shreds fly

The developers at Nether Realm Studios have turned up the heat until the bones splinter. You'll kill your opponent an estimated 20 times per game by smashing heads, ripping out important organs and doing whatever else you can think of. The morbid X-ray view is of course a must. Seconds later, everything is back in the right place. Absurd: yes; awesome: oh yes. Finally, you can go one better and use one of the many unusual fatalities for the final death combo.

Each character has a wardrobe full of alternative outfits. You can also customise items such as glasses or weapons. 26 playable characters are at your disposal. "Mortal Kombat 11" therefore offers plenty of content. You can see what the splatter orgy looks like up close in our Let's Play.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
