The new Synology NAS offers more freedom when upgrading the memory and supports 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet. There are restrictions in the choice of hard drives.

The manufacturer Synology offers NAS systems for various target groups and applications. The Plus series is aimed at ambitious private users and small businesses. The 2025 model generation of the DiskStation Plus series is now available from us.

The NAS systems differ, among other things, in the number of bays and their expandability, partly by processors and the capacity of the pre-installed memory. All products are equipped with two M.2 slots.

All but the DS425+ can be upgraded to up to 32 gigabytes of RAM using two 16-gigabyte RAM modules. The DS425+ is limited to a maximum of six GB. Two GB are permanently installed, leaving room for a 4 GB bar. The situation is similar with the hard drive bays: With the exception of the DS425+, all products can be expanded using the DX525 expansion module (with five additional bays each).

Differences to the previous models

Synology has improved the network connection. While the predecessors were limited to 1 Gbit/s, the new models have at least a 2.5 gigabit connection on board. With the predecessors, you had to make do with 1 Gbit/s.

The new NAS systems are unfortunately only compatible with hard drives and SSD storage from Synology. You can find out which ones you can use here. Previously, this restriction only applied to enterprise systems. This has already been hotly debated in the comments of my colleague Jan's news

Synology further restricts free choice of hard drives in NAS

    by Jan Johannsen

The manufacturer justifies the move by saying that the Synology discs have been thoroughly tested and that you are purchasing a coordinated system. There is now only one point of contact for support cases. The Synology hard drives are said to fully meet the requirements for robustness and longevity, which cannot be guaranteed for products from other manufacturers. Nevertheless, the decision to no longer give users a choice is clearly a restriction.

Software functions: expandable with additional apps

Synology NAS systems use the operating system DSM 7.2. You can also manage your NAS using apps for iOS and Android. You can expand its functionalities with numerous additional apps.

The system supports the creation of a private cloud - «Synology Drive» - with file synchronisation, versioning and user sharing. Additional synchronisation with Internet clouds such as Dropbox, Google Drive and One Drive is possible.

The «Active Backup Suite» serves as a central backup solution for various devices and applications. With the app «Surveillance Station» you can manage IP cameras. This allows you to create schedules and configure notifications.

Photo management with AI-supported face recognition is also available. Photos can be automatically sorted by people, locations and events.
