iOS 17 users complain about reachability bug - which could be precarious

As Reddit users write, there is apparently an undiscovered bug in iOS 17 that causes the iPhone to crash at night without any user intervention. The reports have become more frequent, especially, but not only, on Monday night. This may be a problem.
A problematic iOS bug is currently making headlines. Many users' iPhones are crashing at night. The device then restarts. At first it looks as if the phone has installed an update overnight. However, this is not the case.
Problems with accessibility
In and of itself, that would be half as bad. The iPhone worked perfectly the next morning. The only problem is that you usually have to enter a PIN for the SIM card to be reachable via the mobile network again. This is also a good thing in principle, as it serves as a protective measure against misuse. This prevents a potential thief from making calls at your expense. However, if you do not enter the PIN, you cannot be reached via the mobile network. This is a problem for people who are on standby duty, for example.
Battery graphic proves operational pause
For some users, the pause between the crash and the restart apparently lasted longer. This is indicated by the iPhone's green charging curve. This shows gaps, sometimes over several hours. Sleep mode was also not terminated properly in some cases. This also indicates an unforeseen interruption.
The problem is also confirmed by sources such as the magazine PC Games Hardware.

The problem apparently affects both older and current iPhone models, including the iPhone 15 series. Most of them were in charging mode. This phenomenon also occurred again overnight, although not to the same extent as on Monday. Provisional workaround: To be on the safe side, you should deactivate the SIM PIN if you urgently need to be reachable at night.
Apple has not yet commented on this or announced a bug fix via an update.

I've been tinkering with digital networks ever since I found out how to activate both telephone channels on the ISDN card for greater bandwidth. As for the analogue variety, I've been doing that since I learned to talk. Though Winterthur is my adoptive home city, my heart still bleeds red and blue.
