Google Stadia was already teetering on the release of the streaming service in 2019, with a fairly small game catalog, and an even smaller selection of first-party titles. Then, about a year after the original release, Google shut down some internal Stadia studios as well.
What is the state of Google Stadia in 2022?
Since then, things have been pretty quiet around Google's gaming service, and according to a new report from Business Insider, Google Stadia has now been "deprioritized," potentially putting the final nail in the coffin for Stadia. According to the report, Google is looking to sell the technology behind Stadia to other companies under the name "Google Stream."
Google reportedly started talks with Peloton and developer studio Bungie last year. The latter, by the way, were recently bought out by Sony. Likewise, Google struck a deal with AT&T, and was in talks with Capcom. The developer studio probably wanted to make demos of their games playable on their website.
However, in a statement to Business Insider, Google said that the company is still working on Stadia and wants to make over 100 new games available in 2022:
"We announced our intention to help publishers and partners deliver games directly to gamers last year, and have been working towards this. The first manifestation was our partnership with AT&T, who are making Batman: Arkham Knight available to their customers for free. While we don't comment on rumors or speculation about other industry partners, we are still focused on bringing great games to Stadia in 2022. With over 200 titles currently available, we expect to add over 100 new games to the platform in 2022, and we currently have 50 games that customers can claim in Stadia Pro."
Google may want to hold on to their streaming platform for a bit longer, although the company closed all internal Stadia studios in the past and some games can no longer be patched due to the layoffs.
