From "Age of Empires 3" to "Star Wars: Squadrons": 34 trailers from Gamescom
There were plenty of new games to see at the opening event of Gamescom. Although the trade fair only takes place digitally, there was no lack of spectacle.
Normally, Gamescom in Cologne would be in full swing right now. However, the gates to the world's largest games trade fair will remain closed this year. Instead, the event is taking place digitally. Tons of new trailers were presented at the Gamescom Opening Night on Thursday evening. Including some long-awaited highlights.
"Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War"
The "Black Ops" series takes a detour into the Cold War. An astonishingly realistic animated Ronald Reagan and an espionage thriller between the CIA and KGB await you in the latest instalment. Visually, the whole thing looks very opulent. To be released on 13 November.
"Star Wars: Squadrons"
The latest trailer shows part of the single-player campaign with an escort mission. The game will be released on 2 October.
"Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition"
After the first two parts have already been given a makeover, it's now the third part's turn. You can set sail for the USA again on 15 October and wage war with Indians and colonialists.
"Unknown 9: Awakening"
This game is based on the book of the same name as well as a podcast and a comic series. The trailer gives little away. Just that a girl called Haroona in India discovers that she has special powers. Coming sometime in 2021.
"Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods, Part One"
"Ancient Gods, Part One" will be released on 10 October and continues the story (yes, story. Crazy, I know) about the Doomslayer.
"Dragon Age 4"
The development of the next "Dragon Age" does not seem to have progressed very far. One reason for this may be the internal difficulties at Studio Bioware, which are not only related to the flopped "Anthem", but also to... . Unfortunately, the behind-the-scenes trailer doesn't show much more than some pretty artwork and a few gameplay snippets.
"Surgeon Simulator 2"
The game has already been released and this trailer shows once again why you need to get it. With up to four friends, you can finally become the gross motorised chief surgeon you've always wanted to be.
"Bridge Constructor + The Walking Dead"
There was already a "Bridge Constructor" in the "Portal" universe, so why not another one with zombies? Sounds crazy enough that it could work. Should be released later this year.
"Sam and Max VR: This Time It's Virtual"
The cult adventure series returns in VR. The trailer doesn't reveal much, but the crazy police duo have rarely disappointed so far.
"World of Warcraft: Shadowlands"
Two trailers have been released for the new "World of Warcraft" expansion "Shadowlands". This will be released on 27 October.
"Warhammer: Age of Sigmar - Storm Ground"
Even though the trailer shows nothing of the game, I'm always excited to see where the series will go next.
"Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time Flashback levels"
The Flashback levels are for players looking for an extra challenge. You can play them from 2 October
"Fall Guys Season 2"
New levels, new mini-games and new outfits in medieval design. This and more awaits you in the second season of "Fall Guys". It starts sometime in October.
"Little Nightmares 2"
The eerily beautiful horror puzzle game "Little Nightmares" is getting a sequel. The planned release date is February 2021.
"Sims 4 Journey to Batuu"
Even six years after its release, the fourth "Sims" instalment is still as lively as ever. The latest expansion brings a pinch of "Star Wars" to the life simulation game. Release date is 8 September 2020.
"12 Minutes"
I've been waiting considerably longer than twelve minutes for the release of this game. The adventure game with an unusual bird's eye view introduces well-known voice actors such as Daisy Ridley, James McAvoy and Willem Dafoe in the Gamescom trailer. A concrete release date is still missing. It should be soon.
"Lemnis Gate"
I first read "Lemmy's Gate" and was already looking forward to a Motörhead game. Instead, "Lemnis Gate" is a turn-based multiplayer action game with a sci-fi setting. It is due to be released in early 2021.
"Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond"
The makers of "Titan Fall" and "Apex Legends" are releasing their first VR game, "Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond". It is due to be released at the end of the year.
"Destiny 2: Beyond Light"
This trailer shows what awaits you in the new expansion. The time has come on 10 November.
"Outriders"
The co-op RPG from the "Bulletstorm" developers People Can Fly also stopped by the digital Gamescom. Release is planned for the end of the year.
"Necromunda Underhive Wars"
The trailer for "Necromunda Underhive Wars" exudes a little sci-fi, a little post-apocalypse and a whole lot of action. Find out on 8 September whether it delivers what it promises.
"Teardown"
I'm sure that "Teardown" is not just on my wish list. It offers a mixture of "Minecraft" and "Red Faction" and lots of dreamlike pixel destruction. Early access is still planned for 2020.
"Godfall"
The "looter slasher" planned for PS5 and PC was also represented with new gameplay. The name is self-chosen and is expressed in the trailer by colourful action and lots of loot to find and equip.
"Override 2 Super Mech League"
The anime mechs in "Override 2" are also colourful. The game can be played alone or with up to three other players. The game is due to be released at the end of the year.
"Mafia Definitive Edition"
The remake, remaster or whatever you want to call it of the first "Mafia" instalment also looks impressive in the latest trailer. On 25 September, you can climb the ladder to the next godfather.
"Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga"
From Luke's attack on the Death Star to the epic lightsaber duel between Rey and Kylo Ren, play your way through all the Star Wars instalments in Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Coming in spring 2021.
"Struggling"
I struggled with the description. You are a fleshy something with two arms with which you can swing through the levels. There's plenty of humour, even more strange characters and locations. Playable alone or in co-op. Available for Switch and PC since 27 August:
"Chorus"
The space action game has already been shown at the Xbox Series X event. Now we can see gameplay for the first time and it doesn't look too bad. To be released in 2021
"Spellbreak"
Battle royale with magic. Perhaps the most original concept for the popular genre comes from developer Proletariat and will be officially released as a free-to-play game on 3 September after a lengthy beta phase.
"Scarlet Nexus"
There was also a new gameplay trailer for "Scarlet Nexus". Anime, action-packed, crazy enemy design and colourful. The title is clearly not lacking in variety. Coming in 2021
"Quantum Error"
A horror first-person shooter in space. No, unfortunately it's not a new "Dead Space", but possibly the next best thing. I am curious. Release was originally set for the end of the year, but could be delayed to 2021.
"Dirt 5"
The racing series seems to be getting crazier and crazier. In addition to racing simulation, you can now also expect self-made tracks with loops and giant bowling pins. The game will be released on 16 October.
"WWE 2K Battlegrounds"
No, it's not a battle royal with a wrestling setting. It's "just" a completely crazy wrestling game with aggressive billy goats and electric attacks. To be released on 18 September.
