Chrome: Important security update is available

Google has updated the Chrome browser. The new version contains security patches that repair risky vulnerabilities in the browser engine.
This night, Google released new versions of its Chrome browser. Both for Linux and macOS (version 116.0.5845.110) and Windows (version 116.0.5845.111) as well as for Android (Chrome 116.0.5845.114) and iOS (Chrome 116.0.5845.118). This is a particularly important update, as it closes gateways for malware, among other things. A total of five vulnerabilities were found in Chrome. Four of these were categorised as high-risk by Google's developers, one as "moderate".
The vulnerabilities are so-called "use-after-free vulnerabilities", which are located both in the Vulkan interfaces and in the loader. They ensure that the programme code can access unused resources. Malware can also make use of them. For example, it can get onto the device through manipulated websites (CSS). Another gateway can be found in the JavaScript engine.
The vulnerabilities are based on Chromium, as the detailed log file suggests. So it may well be that you will soon receive an update for the Edge browser too, as this is also based on Chromium.
The good news: Google now wants to publish weekly security updates for Chrome. This is what the company writes in its blog.
How to update the browser
While you can simply install the mobile updates via the respective app store, you can access the update menu for the Linux, macOS and Windows versions via the three vertical dots in the top right-hand corner.

Select the "Help" menu, then "About Google Chrome". The browser will immediately check for updates and install them. Remember to restart the browser afterwards so that the updates are installed correctly.

I've been tinkering with digital networks ever since I found out how to activate both telephone channels on the ISDN card for greater bandwidth. As for the analogue variety, I've been doing that since I learned to talk. Though Winterthur is my adoptive home city, my heart still bleeds red and blue.
