Canon EOS R6 Mark II
24.20 Mpx, Full frame
A new sensor with 24 megapixel resolution, faster continuous shooting speed and better video capabilities: That's what the second version of the full-frame EOS R6 camera offers.
The Canon EOS R6 Mark II is Canon's latest full-frame camera. Like its predecessor, it sits below the EOS R5. The new model has a resolution of 24 megapixels and a continuous shooting speed of 40 frames per second. The R6 Mark II can also record video up to 4K 60p quality without crop. It will cost 2629 Swiss francs in Switzerland and 2899 euros in Germany at the start of sales.
On the outside, nothing has changed compared to the first version of the R6. Body and operation are almost identical. Only the on switch on top of the body has moved to the right. In its old place is now a switch that changes between photo and video mode. The 3-inch touch screen has 1.62 million pixels. The electronic viewfinder covers 100 per cent of the image at a magnification of 0.76 with a resolution of 3.69 million pixels. These values are also no different from the predecessor.
The new CMOS sensor is said by Canon to provide "outstanding image quality in all lighting situations". At 24.2 megapixels, resolution is up four megapixels from the old R6. The ISO range is the same as before, from 100 to 102,400 - and is expandable to ISO 50 to 204,800. The Digic-X processor is also already in the R6 and R5. The in-body image stabiliser is still supposed to compensate for camera shake by up to 8 stops.
A new feature is the "Deep Learning Autofocus". Canon says it now recognises horses, planes and trains. Apart from this new feature, it is the already familiar Dual Pixel Autofocus with 1053 focus points. It also tracks the sharpness at the high continuous shooting speed of up to 40 frames per second. The R6 Mark II reaches this value with the electronic shutter, with the mechanical one the limit is twelve frames per second. At 40 FPS, the buffer is sufficient for 75 raw images, at twelve FPS for 110.
Canon has slightly improved the video mode. The maximum clip length of 29:59 minutes has been increased - to 6 hours. The EOS R6 Mark II can record 4K at up to 60 frames per second using oversampling. Unlike its predecessor, this happens without crop. The maximum bit rate for internal recording is still 340 Mbit/s in H.265 format. With external recording, the camera can output raw video up to 6K 60P. In full HD, the R6 now manages up to 180 frames per second
.
Along with the new camera, Canon has also announced a new lens: the RF 135 mm F1.8 IS USM is the new edition of the classic portrait focal length for the mirrorless bayonet. With a maximum aperture of 1.8, it is slightly faster than Canon's last 135 mm. The closest focusing distance has improved from 90 to 70 cm. A new feature is the 5.5-step image stabiliser.
The better performance is reflected in the weight - the new RF lens has a weight of 935 grams. This makes it 185 grams heavier than the old EF version. The dimensions are also slightly larger at 89.2 x 130.3 mm. A nano-ultrasonic motor is built into the lens. It is splash-proof and has a filter diameter of 82 mm. At the start of sales, the price in Switzerland is 2499 Swiss francs, in Germany 2699 euros.
My fingerprint often changes so drastically that my MacBook doesn't recognise it anymore. The reason? If I'm not clinging to a monitor or camera, I'm probably clinging to a rockface by the tips of my fingers.
