Camera update: annoying bug in Sony Alpha 1 fixed

If the electronic viewfinder doesn't turn on, the best autofocus in the world is no use to you. Sony has now launched a firmware update to fix this annoying problem.

Imagine this: you wait an hour until the bird you want to photograph finally shows itself at a good distance and in the right light. You invested in a super-expensive camera that's fast and smart enough to focus correctly in these crucial split seconds. And then, when the time comes, you can't take the picture because the electronic viewfinder won’t switch on when you look through the camera.

This kept happening to me while testing the Sony Alpha 1. It's extremely annoying and frankly unacceptable for such an expensive camera. However, I wasn't sure if this was a general problem with the camera or just an issue with the one I received.

Now I know that it’s a general problem. Well, it was. Sony has fixed it. The eye sensor didn’t work properly with strong light sources in version 1.0.

The firmware update 1.10 for the Sony Alpha 1 has fixed this bug and eliminated other weaknesses, too. For example, the stability of the camera and autofocus, the interaction with mobile apps and the operational stability of the SEL100400GM, SEL200600G and SEL600F40GM lenses have been improved. This test video also shows that problems with the built-in image stabiliser have been fixed.

You’ll find the links to the firmware updates on this support page. There is a download for Mac and one for Windows.
