AMD powers the fastest supercomputer
The new supercomputer is called El Capitan and is scheduled to go online in 2023, using AMD processors and graphics cards. With a capacity of over 2 exaflops, it will compute faster than today’s 200 fastest systems combined.
Just imagine: all 7.7 billion people on earth carrying out one calculation every second. All these people would need eight years to handle what El Capitan can tackle in a single second. El Capitan manages two trillion calculations per second, which is ten times faster than the fastest supercomputer out there today.
The main task of the supercomputer revolves around modelling ageing processes of the US nuclear weapon inventory. El Capitan will also be used for cancer and climate research, at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.
AMD gets another victory
The project is a great success for AMD and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, who designed the supercomputer. To date, supercomputers have usually been powered by Intel processors and Nvidia graphic cards. The steps taken by AMD in both areas challenges the competition in these segments.
El Capitan is powered by 4th gen Epyc processors. They have the codename Genoa and are based on the Zen-4 architecture. The GPUs are 3rd gen Radeon Instinct cards of the Infinity architecture.
