9 games that also need a battle royale mode
Out of nowhere, Nintendo has unveiled a battle royale version of "Tetris". In other words, for a game that only consists of falling blocks. If Nintendo can realise such a far-fetched idea, then so can I.
If you had asked me yesterday which game was guaranteed not to have a battle royale mode, "Tetris" would have been at the top of my list. Nintendo was right to disagree and presented "Tetris 99" for the Nintendo Switch on Wednesday. The game requires the paid online service, but is otherwise free. 99 players drop blocks in "Tetris" and shoot tetrominoes at each other. The player who manages to delay the game over screen the longest wins.
The Battle Royale game mode, which is based on the Japanese film or book of the same name, consists of the following basic principle: Several players (usually 100) land on an island using a parachute, jetpack or similar flying vehicle. The aim is then to collect weapons and equipment as quickly as possible in order to take down the other players. At the same time, the playing field is constantly shrinking due to a deadly wall. Whoever is still alive at the end wins.
As "Tetris 99" shows, the game principle can be applied to more than just shooter games. Mindblowing. I have strained my grey brain cells to find a few more games that could do with a battle royale mode.
"Rocket League"

100 cars jump out of an aeroplane and land on a desert island. There begins the biggest destruction derby of all time. Weapons and power-ups provide a Mad Max vibe. The whole island is covered by a dome, which the vehicles can race along with enough speed. However, the dome is energised when it contracts.
"Mortal Kombat"

The game is already a matter of life and death. The leap to Battle Royale is not that far away. Apparently there are 73(!) different characters. A class system like in "Apex" would be obvious. The loot phase is omitted. Instead, you can strike down enemies with bloody combos from the very first second and then send them out of the game with a "FINISH HIM".
"Goat Simulator"

100 aggressive goats fall from the sky and smash their horns. Whoever finds the hidden pentagram can transform into the devil goat. However, all the other goats will then know where it is. If you are outside the circle of death, you will gradually transform into a weaker animal such as a chicken, rabbit, hamster or dolphin. You are then weaker, but can hide better (except as a dolphin). However, this won't help you much in the final battle if you're taken by the horns.
"Age of Empires"

Players select their starting position on a world map. You can see where your opponents are. You build your camp, collect resources and try to develop your civilisation to strengthen your forces. If the deadly circle closes in on your village, it's time to take action: Take to your heels and set up a new camp. Alternatively, you can wipe out an enemy civilisation and then inherit its infrastructure. The circle of death can adapt to the times and take on various forms, from plagues of locusts to the plague and global warming.
"Euro Truck Simulator"

100 lorries start at various locations in Europe. The aim is to be the first to arrive at a certain point in the centre. The aim is to comply with the traffic rules and not damage any other vehicles or traffic lights. This is penalised with a time penalty. Only other players may be rammed. Clean driving is rewarded with points. You can exchange these at petrol stations for Super Diesel, which makes you faster for a short time. Or you can get a temporary free pass so that you can break the traffic rules. New roads are constantly being closed during the game, making it increasingly difficult to find a quick route to your destination.
"Diablo"

The map is a dungeon consisting of 20 levels that are connected linearly. You start on a random level and fight monsters that reward you with loot on the one hand and against other players on the other. The class system is retained. One dungeon is eliminated in each phase. If you don't manage to move up or down a level in time, you die. At the end, there is only one level left and the surviving heroes fight for victory. Diablo is also involved, by the way. Somehow. It's quite possible that evil triumphs from time to time.
"Super Mario"

You and 99 other Marios, Luigis, Peachs and the like are randomly thrown to the edge of a huge castle. The aim is to be the first to touch the flag at the top of the castle. At the same time, a circle of fire slowly closes around the castle. There are many ways to reach the goal and your jump 'n' run skills are required. You can shoot enemies off platforms with power-ups such as the fire flower or trap them in ice cubes and slow them down. Anyone who dies is teleported back to the edge of the closing circle.
"Fifa"

100 players try to score as many goals as possible in a given time on a huge football pitch. There are ten balls and, in addition to the regular goals, two on each side. You can focus on scoring goals or on brutally straddling your opponents. After five straddles, the player hit is retired early. Anyone who has committed five fouls, on the other hand, is sent to the bench for 15 penalty seconds. Provided they are seen by the referee. Fouls behind his back go unpunished. His field of vision is marked by a cone. Just like in real life.
"Stardew Valley"

Instead of peacefully cultivating a farm, you send enemy farmers to the slaughter. You can cut down trees to carve fences out of them. You can use them to wall off enemies or barricade their path while the wall of death rolls in from behind. You can find swords and axes for close combat in chests. For more speed, you can switch to a horse. However, you won't be able to wield a weapon. Sounds absurd, but it actually already exists as a mod.
So, those were my suggestions. Do you have any similarly inane ideas? Then write them in the comments column.
As a child, I wasn't allowed to have any consoles. It was only with the arrival of the family's 486 PC that the magical world of gaming opened up to me. Today, I'm overcompensating accordingly. Only a lack of time and money prevents me from trying out every game there is and decorating my shelf with rare retro consoles.
