7 things you shouldn't miss at Suisse Toy Digital

The Suisse Toy fair is inviting game lovers to play until Sunday. I'll give you my recommendations so that you know where to head straight away.

On entering the Suisse-Toy site, two things catch my eye: A children's rollercoaster made of miniature trains that I'm only too happy to queue for, and a fleet of pushchairs. If they want to slow me down while I'm exploring the halls, they can queue at the back - and they have to, because there's an extra queue at the entrance for pushchair owners. Once inside, however, I quickly realise that the mums and dads don't have the same goal as me anyway. While I'm drawn to the Suisse Toy Digital on the lower floor, the pushchairs roll purposefully to the escalator and up to the first floor, where the Famexpo is taking place. Lucky me. But there are also lots of children at Suisse Toy Digital - big and small. However, most of them can already walk themselves and operate controllers without drooling on them - most of the time.

The digital part of Suisse Toy is all about video games and everything that goes with them. The analogue part is called Classic and my colleague Ramon Schneider visited it. But first, here are my seven tips if you're travelling to Bern in the next few days
.

Nintendo stand

There are no more gaming opportunities per square metre anywhere. Nintendo's stand is a colourful mix of glowing monitors, oversized figures and lots of red paint so that everyone knows which manufacturer is promoting its products here. It's well worth a visit, as you can play "Mario Kart 8", "Mario + Rabbids" and the upcoming "Super Mario Odyssey" here.

Merchandise

Bring a big wallet, because the many merchandise stands will tempt you with lots of cool stuff that nobody needs but everyone has to have. Retro stands are also prominently represented, where you can buy almost anything from the NES to the first Playstation.

Drone racing

The pilots race their drones through rings and curves and occasionally into a wall at breakneck speed. The flying speedsters are controlled with VR goggles. It's very reminiscent of the speeder bike chase from "Star Wars VI", only with less body damage. Unfortunately, visitors can't do the driving themselves. The risk of scrap metal would probably be too high. What's more, the pilots bring their own equipment. The second indoor championship will be held at Suisse Toy until Sunday.

Tabletop with catapults

Another highlight is the ScyDes stand. The Swiss company has developed its own tabletop game. The aim of Walls is to build a small fortress and then raze the opponent's fortress to the ground with a catapult. No digital bits and bobs here. Here you still play with real toys. Extremely satisfying. Don't miss out on the fun and support the developers with their project.

E-Sport

You can't miss the big stage in the centre of Suisse Toy Digital. Various tournaments will be held there until Sunday. Including, of course, the final of the "League of Legends Autumn Cup", which digitec users were also able to register for. Even if you don't have a clue what's going on on the big screen, it's fun to watch. You can often tell what's happening from the oooohs and oooohs of the fans.

Retro stand

It's not nearly as big and extensive as the one at Gamescom in Cologne, but they also started small. The retro corner in Bern is manageable, but still offers some exciting classics that are worth a visit - even if some of the old games like Pac Man run on an emulator.

Try out and buy gamer PCs

A little self-promotion is also allowed. At the Asus stand, you can get hands-on with various high-end gaming PCs and game "Overwatch" or "Rise of the Tomb Raider" in all their glory. This way you can test whether the fancy, shiny things are worth their price. You can then buy the digitec Zero-Cool ROG PCs on display from us at a discounted price. There will only be 13 units available for pre-order and they should be available after the refurbishment in November.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
