Yes, audio must of course be connected to a system (not simply via HDMI to the TV). Audio CDs are recognised and played cleanly (but my setup is: BDP-X300 via HDMI to AV receiver). When I briefly tested playing audio CDs (I don't use this function otherwise), I simply saw that the display of the player only shows the elapsed time of the current track, no track number or total time.
Unfortunately, no, it is not region-free. Unfortunately, we do not currently have a player that is region code free.
