When I use the appliance connection, how do I empty it? Does it have to be right next to the sink so that it empties straight away?

No, it's not compulsory :) Personally, I don't put it near the sink, so I have a bucket underneath, into which I put the drain hose and which I empty into the sink or toilet after each cycle.
