When does it make sense at all to buy a router from a dealer if you decide on a bundle Internet + telephony (VOIP) + TV and want to use all the service features of the provider?

Helpful answer

It depends on what functionality you need from the router. I operate an (adsl) FritzBox behind a cable model from my provider. I use TV, telephony and internet access from the provider, but distribute the internet in the house with the Fritzbox (and the telephone also goes through the Fritzbox).
I get the following advantages from the Fritzbox, which I would not want to do without and which no other manufacturer offers in this way:
- Very user-friendly interface
- All the functions of a "normal" router
- Call filter with wildcards for telephony
- Integrated DECT base with phone book synchronisation
- Internet filter for children (parental control) with maintained blacklist
- VPN, remote maintenance
- Homecontrol integration, incl. Powerlan states
- Network monitoring
- and much more.
The "performance features" of the provider are certainly not as good as those of a Fritzbox with regard to the router, unless the provider uses a Fritzbox himself...

Good question. I can agree with the previous speaker: It depends on what you want to use. BUT it also depends on the service provider: For example, if you don't get the VoIP access data (credentials) from the provider, I don't think you can use all the telephony functions (e.g. answering machine, call list, IP telephony via FritzFonApp, etc.).

In my opinion, this would be a reason not to use it.

What speaks against the standard routers of the service providers is that they are deliberately limited so that the providers save on maintenance costs. Often there are no function updates, so you are dependent on the provider, for better or worse.

If (like the previous speaker) you put the Fritzbox "behind" the provider's router, you have the disadvantage of double the electricity costs, but you can manage everything yourself (at least the Internet part) on the Fritzbox (including passwords, etc.). However, there is no support from the service provider for the part "behind" the modem! You should know a little about the subject matter (port configurations, SIP settings, etc.).
