What about backwards compatibility? For example, if I now have 2 NanoBeam M5s and one is defective... can I simply replace the defective one with this device? After all, they are both 5GHz.

No, unfortunately it does not work. The M5 is 802.11n while the 5AC only does 802.11ac.

Should actually work. After all, it's a normal wifi.
