Some MacStudios say air-cooled, others say passive (without fan). Are there two different types and are they not all equipped with the same ventilation system? If so, how do they differ?

Yes, there are two types of cooling in Mac Pro computers: air-cooled and passive (fanless).
Air-cooled Mac Pro models use one or more fans to remove heat from the processor and other components.

Passively cooled Mac Pro models instead use a heat pipe system that dissipates heat via heat conduction rods from the hot components to the aluminium rack units that act as heat sinks.

Overall, the passive cooling system is more efficient and quieter, but it also has limitations in performance and can overheat during very demanding tasks.

The Mac Pro Studio is an air-cooled computer that uses fans for cooling. There are no passively cooled Mac Pro Studio models.

There is only one ventilation system, an integrated circular fan! However, it is relatively large and the Silicon Apple M1 processors do not get as warm as the Intel processors. The device is very quiet, i.e. hardly audible.
