Question about Synology DS923+
Since the NAS will be quite close to my bedroom, I'm worried that you can hear the HDDs rattling all the way to the bed :D Can I equip the NAS with SSDs instead of HDDs, since the prices are not so different anymore for 2TB approx. 100.- (https://www.digitec.ch/de/s1/product/samsung-970-evo-plus-2000-gb-m2-2280-ssd-10339167). Or just 4TB, but that costs quite a lot... >300.- https://www.digitec.ch/de/s1/product/wd-red-sn700-4000-gb-m2-2280-ssd-16803113 I don't know if a Crucial or a Kingston SSD would be the right choice for continuous operation. Does anyone have any experience. Also, I only see comments that the SSD serves as a cache in the NAS, is it even possible to use an SSD as main storage? Does a Synology SSD have to be used? Well, the NAS also has at least one fan that you will hear sooner or later. The disks nowadays are - depending on the RPM - no longer so incredibly loud or do not add any noise. I worked about 70cm away from a 414 and a 409+ and yes, it can be annoying, but it doesn't have to be and you get used to it. The further away, the better and then you can also put the whole thing in a cabinet...
Of course, you can also use SSDs in this way; it's best to take a look at the compatibility list: https://www.synology.com/de-de....
But whether it's worth it (especially since you actually "only" have SSDs from Synology as compatible) is another matter.

The fans on the Synology NAS are virtually silent in Quiet Mode, only if the temperature inside were to rise dramatically would they speed up a bit. I use a DS418 with the same two fans as in the DS923+ in the living room with 3 x Seagate Barracuda 5TB 2.5 inch disks and the whole thing is absolutely no problem and the fans have never been noisy.
To keep the hard drives quiet, I would use 2.5 inch hard drives, if possible with CMR recording. They are very quiet, light and also need very little power.
I wouldn't use SSDs, they simply cost too much. Special NAS hard drives are not necessary and WD RED are marked as "they should be replaced" by the WD firmware after a few years of use, so I wouldn't recommend them at all, then rather Seagate Ironwolf, but as mentioned, just use 2.5 inch notebook hard drives, they also last very well and for a long time.
