Is the amp usable without an active subwoofer? I have old and rather expensive speakers that are equipped with passive woofers connected to an amp (which I want to connect to the pre-amp output) (for the 2 front channels).

Yes, the amp can be used without an active subwoofer. Simply connect the subwoofer amplifier you already have to the "Subwoofer Pre-Amp" cinch connector on the Onkyo receiver.
