I don't use the device in exactly the same way. I have the 7490 running as a router behind the UPC Box (in bridge mode). But I don't see any other difference in terms of functions. The 7490 has the telephone functions and the 3490 is identical from a router/AP point of view (except of course AC etc) without DECT.
