I'm currently testing this soundbar. Even when directly connected to KODI running ATMOS demos with the soundbar displaying ATMOS on the screen the sound is very front heavy. I don't really have the feeling of being getting sounds neither from the ceiling or left and right channels clearly.

Do I need to setup the soundbar at a certain distance of the viewers or in some particular mode or is the surround just mediocre?

As the sound goes up to the ceiling, yes there is a optimal distance, minimum 1,5 m
