I'm currently in the process of switching everything in my house to Ubiquiti infrastructure. I currently have the switch and in the near future the DreamMachine will also serve as a router. Can I also use the camera without the router via mobile or is the router essential for this?

To use the full functionality of the camera, you need UniFi Protect running on the UDM Pro or SE. The functionality in standalone mode is very limited and you need extra software to receive the RTSP video stream.
