If I stack the containers 40 litres, can I then open the lower ones and fill them? Unfortunately, this is not visible in the pictures.

Yes, they open easily. The grey "flap" in the picture is a flap that opens. It also clicks shut and is pretty tight. Fits perfectly for us, have stacked 4👍.
