I realise that the base is magnetic, but is it possible to screw the camera directly to the wall? I don't trust the magnetic base. What about the recording? You can probably save to a MicroSD, but these are known for their short lifespan. Can you also use a network storage device?

It is not possible to fix the camera to walls. The magnetic base works very well, my camera is outside and has had no problems even in stormy and windy conditions. Tapo has an option with vode cameras that fix directly to the wall with similar features (Tapo C420), but they have to be connected to a hub and the MicroSD card in this case is installed on the hub (I have 2 and they still work fine, although I prefer the Tapo C425 that doesn't need a hub and only depends on the range of my wifi). As an alternative to MicroSD you can use the Tapo cloud for a fee. But there are very reliable commercial MicroSDs at a reasonable price.

I can confirm that the magnetic base holds very well, even when it is stormy outside, for example. Furthermore, there are now very good MicroSD cards that are specially made for video cameras and last a long time. In addition to cloud storage, you can now also use a local hub from Tapo.

The magnet base is extremely strong. It has a cloud memory that costs something else.
