I need a player that reads USB .AVI and .MKV files, is this the case here? I haven't found anything with the DP-UB824 either.

According to the operating instructions, it reads the following file formats from the USB connection: AVCHD, AVCHD 3D, MKV, MP4, MPEG2, JPEG, MPO, AAC, AIFF, ALAC, DSD (DFF, DSF), FLAC, MP3, WAV, WMA. Have not tested all of them, of course.

I can't say whether it works via USB, but it does work via NAS.
