I know I'm lost but do I just have to buy the router, plug it in, connect it to the PC and I have wifi(lan) or do I still have to pay monthly for (a subscription)?

Internet is not something that comes out of the wall or the socket for free.

Well, the connection has to be activated first (by the internet service provider), you plug your router into it and then something like that, yes.
