i have to press the toothbrush almost uncomfortably hard against the tooth for the indicator to light up green. if i just put it on or press lightly, the indicator only lights up purple. is that normal?

Yes, it's normal...and the longer you use them, the less pain you have. It was the same for me at the beginning with pain. I brushed the surface of my teeth first and then gently started to include the sides. Take your time when using the IO toothbrush.
