I have a Synology DS712+ with two 1 TB storage units in use. Now I would like to expand my storage capacity to 20 to 30 TB.
Can I connect the DS1522+ to the DS712+ so that I can visualise the entire capacity under one partition?
Or do I have to partition the 712 and 1522 separately?

You cannot connect the DS1522+ and the DS712+ so that the entire storage capacity is visible under a single partition. Both NAS must be managed and partitioned separately.
Synology NAS systems do not support direct merging of storage space across different devices into a single partition. However, you can access both systems via network shares and thus use the storage space, but each unit manages its hard drives and volumes independently.
For a uniformly large storage capacity, a single, larger NAS such as the DS1522+ with correspondingly large hard drives would be the better solution. The DS712+ is an older model with only two drive bays and cannot be connected directly to the DS1522+ to form a shared storage pool.
