Question about Microsoft Windows 10 Home

I am a bit confused right now, I only saw that it is an OEM version after receiving the shipment. Can I "rein in" this licence once I have a new computer and deactivate the licence on the old one beforehand? Can I download the normal Windows 10 version from Microsoft or do I have to deal with the OEM Builder Tools stuff?

Helpful answer

OEM is a normal version of Windows that is bound to a PC after you install it. If you uninstall it you can install it on another PC. You don't need the OEM Builder stuff, just insert (CD) and install, the OEM stuff just provides some functions for the PC Builder to install the Windows in advance and without a serial number.

Win10 OEM keys and retail keys are (almost) identical. OEM keys are actually intended for manufacturers of prebuilt PCs who want to sell their products with Windows preinstalled. MS offers them a discounted key. However, this does not mean that you as a retail customer are not allowed to use OEM keys. As far as I know, the licence does not restrict this. So everything is ok.

BUT...
an OEM key is locked to the motherboard after the initial activation. You can still change your hardware in your PC, but not the motherboard. This would be the case if you build a whole new PC. In that case, you will have to get a new licence. Deactivating the OEM licence on the old PC and then activating it on a new PC (should) not work.

BUT...
I have read in forums that some people have managed to deactivate the OEM licence and activate it on the new PC. However, some have reported problems afterwards. How exactly those managed to do it who later had no problems was unfortunately not explained in detail. I'll put it this way... it shouldn't work, but "opinions" differ a little.

It didn't work for me with the reinstallation. I had to dictate letter codes back and forth with the Microsoft hotline for about 30 minutes, and at the end she said it was only out of goodwill that I was now allowed to install Windows on a new computer.

It says so. Uninstall old, then install on new. Have fun with it and best regards
