How long does the battery last without a solar panel, or how often does the battery need to be charged?

That depends on how regularly an action is triggered by the PIR.
Perhaps the following will help. I was just absent for 14 days, recorded about 10 activations, but regularly accessed the camera externally. 10% of the battery was used up afterwards. With very regular activation, you need to charge the battery about once a month. I have had the Argus 2 for about 1 year.
