It is M2 storage. You can replace the 500GB M2 card with a 4000GB M2 card,
pcie 3.0 x3 NVMe SSD upgradable to 4TB max
It is not really about deciding between SSD and M.2. This may clarify the alphabet soup. SSD is just a generic term for solid state disk. M2 is the form factor (shaped like a chewing gum vs eg the bigger 2.5” format in older laptops) and NVMe is the data transfer protocol (faster than the older SATA and SCSI).
