Hi Desmond.
I would install all the disks, then consumer them all evenly and participate in the Storj project. If it's fun to play with docker and with the crypto world a bit. Link: https://www.storj.io/node

RAID is not a backup. Use USB or cloud to be safe from ransomware.

If you assume that only 1 disk fails at a time, then RAID 1 with 2 disks is sufficient.
If you assume that 2 disks will fail at the same time, I would also go to SHR-2 and insert all 4 disks.

In any case, take care of a backup solution. You can also set up 3 disks with SHR and connect the 4th disk as an external backup (however, this would not be my favourite variant for the backup).

Or, has the backup problem already been solved?
An automatic backup of Raid 1 (HD 1+2) on HD 3 with versioning several times a week. Put HD 4 in an external enclosure and use it to make backups of HD 3.

Hi Desmond, even if the disks are unused in the DS, they are still running. This means they need power unnecessarily and get operating hours. You can also set up a disc as a hot standby to increase security. I hope this helps you. Greetings
