Hello Together
I have purchased a Synology NAS 920+. I bought it with 4x6TB hard drives. I currently have it configured as Raid 1. I currently only need about 1.5TB. I bought it used (2 months old) with 4x6TB.
Now I still have 2x6 TB "left over".
My question: Should I just leave these 2 "remaining" hard drives inside? Or take them home and store them somewhere? I don't need them at all at the moment because 2x6 TB as Raid 1 are easily enough for me. Unfortunately, I haven't found much useful information on the internet.
Many thanks for your input!
Regards
Desmond :)
Do you already have a backup? Why do you need this NAS? As mentioned above, you could use the additional hard drives as a backup destination. However, this is not optimal if there is a problem with the NAS itself, where all the hard drives would be corrupted afterwards. If you already have a backup solution, you could use RAID 10 for higher security and performance. If you can read English, you can read
https://www.baarf.dk/BAARF... to understand why RAID10 is actually better than RAID5.
What's wrong with doing RAID 1 on all 4 disks? It certainly provides the highest possible level of security (up to 3 defective disks without data loss). If you only make the raid over two and the stupid case occurs that both are defective, it looks even worse. You've already bought it anyway and the disks won't get any fresher from lying around.
