I can't see the wood for the trees and hope that someone here can help me out. I actually quite like the Netatmo Presence. What I need is a Wi-Fi camera, as I can't get a LAN cable there at the moment (maybe later). It would be "nice" if it also had an optional LAN connection. That's also question 1: This one doesn't have that, does it?

But much more important is question 2: Does it work COMPLETELY without any cloud services / subscriptions / etc.?

I just want to hook it up to my internal network, record it on a Synology NAS and access it externally only via VPN to my network (i.e. internally) anyway.

Answer

- no LAN is necessary, the camera can connect to the wifi. wifi does not go far, especially outside around the corner of the wall. the signal may be too weak to stream the video live afterwards. Therefore, check whether there is also good WLAN reception outside. You may need a WLAN amplifier outside.
- You need a netatmo login to configure the cameras, but this is free.  The app is okay though. You can also set areas that are not monitored, such as streets with cars. 
- you can spool the videos to a server, like drop box.
