Question about TP-Link Deco M4 AC1200 Dualband WLAN Mesh 3-pack

Hello all, How do the units communicate with each other? Is it via the mains, or do all the units have to be able to receive each other? I ask because I would install one of the units in a place where there is most likely little or no reception from the main unit.
