all sim cards work. it's just that the settings for swisscom, salt, and sunrise are preconfigured. as soon as you insert a sim card from another provider, you have to enter all the VPN settings manually.
Whether the device works with the SIM card is more a question of your subscription. As far as I know, SIM cards are standardised worldwide. Therefore, the device should work with a SIM card such as a Swisscom subscription in the USA as well as in the USA with a SIM card with a corresponding subscription provider from the USA.
