Does the thing also run with a Mac? Respectively, is there the appropriate software for it?

For me, the thing runs on an iMac, sound works without problems, via USB as well as 3.5mm audio quite well. However, I haven't found any suitable software (apart from the driver), which means you still have to change the light show manually.
