I use it with 2x Samsung Evo Sata SSD. You'll be fine with that. You can only use m2.ssd not as a system partition but only as a cache.

In principle, the device would work perfectly with drives from other manufacturers, but Synology does not "support" this for flimsy reasons (profit maximisation). Without customisation, "third-party" hardware is blocked by DSM software. If you don't expect support from Synology, you can work around this with a little Linux knowledge: https://github.com/007revad/Synology_HDD_db
