Does it make any difference to connect this stick with a USB cable to place it in a more favourable reception position?

Moving the WLAN USB stick to a better position with a USB extension cable is _always_ a good idea.
Maybe also mount the WLAN access point in a more suitable place (optimal would be [1] in the same room and/or [2] above head height).
