Does anyone have experience with this device and can give me a tip on which rechargeable batteries are suitable? Can any type of AA batteries be used?

All NiMH batteries of size AA should fit. I use the etrex 32x with Eneloop batteries (formerly made by Sanyo, now Panasonic), but also the Ikea LADDA 2450. Both fit, although it has to be said that the battery compartment is relatively short in length (presumably to prevent wobbly contacts when shaken in use - it is an outdoor device after all) and the batteries, which tend to be minimally longer than normal batteries, sit quite snugly in the battery compartment.
