Can this be connected directly to a record player that has a speaker output, or do I have to do this via an amplifier/receiver?

If the record player had its own amplifier, which I don't think it does, it would work. If it has 2 cinch plugs as output, it needs an amplifier.
This in turn, depending on the record player, with a special input provided for it.
