Can the ex2 also be operated lying down, or is this harmful to the hard disks?
Not directly. This is certainly possible. However, care should then be taken that the hard disks do not lie on their heads. You should also put some foam or something similar underneath so that any vibrations are dampened by the enclosure. If it stands vertically (normal), it has a rubber pad at the bottom.
