Excerpt from the instructions: "We advise using the baby unit in mains operation. For automatic buffering in the event of a power failure, you can insert four AAAlkaline batteries (1.5 V, not included). Do not use rechargeable batteries. The baby unit has no charging function and rechargeable batteries discharge over time when not in use."

Yes it can. However, the batteries of the baby unit are more for bridging power interruptions. Batteries cannot be recharged as with the parent unit.
