But the largest version - 16 litres - only has space for bottles standing up, doesn't it? A glass bottle is usually over 30 cm. So it's of little use as a collection container.

That's right, the container is not wide enough to hold bottles. I use it as a waste bin for the small 16-litre bags. It is TOP for that.
