Funai WD6D-M100 – DVD/VCR combo recorder
Are recordings directly from the TV to DVD and VHS really still possible?
I can add nothing more to Daniel Siebert's detailed answer.
This depends on the TV set or the type of signals (analogue/digital) fed to the combination unit.
This combi recorder cannot record digital signals from antenna or HDMI, so it cannot record HD.
Analogue audio/video signals can be recorded on VHS and DVD. It is also possible to transfer directly from VHS to DVD. When recording to DVD, the analogue audio/video signals are digitised, at best at 720x576p (depending on the settings in the combination unit).
Since hardly any analogue TV signals are still broadcast via antenna or cable, the TV tuner in the combination unit is useless. Actually, you can only use the AV input of the combination unit. However, this can be connected to analogue sources, in addition to older cameras and VCRs (e.g. Betamax, Video8) also to the analogue output of a set-top box. However, at least with the upc-Cablecom boxes, the analogue output is switched off as soon as HDMI is plugged in. You must also make sure that the box does not switch itself off during a recording (deactivate automatic standby after a certain time in the cablecom box).
The device is ideal for transferring existing analogue video material from VHS tapes to a DVD, thus digitising it in order to preserve it (e.g. your own video recordings from long ago). After about 25 years, VHS cassettes are hardly playable any more. The quality on the magnetic tapes decreases over the years.
Because even burnt DVDs are not durable for long, and experience shows that DVD-RW and DVD+RW can only be used for about 5-10 years (degeneration of the internal layer), it is recommended that the material on the DVD, which is now at least digital, be stored on hard disks with a computer (e.g. a NAS).
For playback from the combination unit, the TV needs an analogue A/V input with cinch sockets (picture and stereo sound). Most televisions still have this today.
The unit only has a dvb-t tuner. Since I don't have the corresponding reception, I can't record any TV programmes with it. Can I?
