Although these speakers are "active" (built-in amplifier), is it possible to operate them with an external amplifier?

You can operate active speakers with Class A amplifiers, but Class D and tube amplifiers as well as bridge power amplifiers are not recommended. - A special adapter cable with a built-in resistor is required for this purpose.
