What is a router?
This refers to a network device that distributes data packets within a network. In most cases, we are talking about a WLAN or DSL router, although there are other types of routers (e.g.
with firewall functionality). There are also routers/modems without WLAN function (= wired router), e.g. if you have already wired everything via Ethernet. You can also deactivate the WLAN on a WLAN router or use a switch.
How does a router work?
Nowadays, almost every household has a router (usually from a provider such as Swisscom or Sunrise), which forms the basis for your Internet access and home network. If you want to visit a website, the browser will forward this request to the router. This now sends the request across the Internet. As soon as the answer comes, the router sends the required data to the PC. Depending on the speed of the Internet, this usually takes less than a second, so that this process is hardly noticed. The bottleneck in speed is therefore not the router, but the subscribed Internet speed.
The router also creates a local network so that files can be transferred between two computers. Through a so-called VPN connection it is also possible to access a local network from the other end of the world.
The most important characteristics of a WLAN router (= wireless LAN, i.e. a wireless network) are a high range as well as data transmission speeds. The router can pass the Internet signal to other computers via a LAN cable, or share the signal with other computers or smartphones via WiFi. For data transmission, it is optimal if the antenna of the receiver points in the same direction as that of the transmitter. However, this rule does not apply without restrictions, as walls, metal surfaces, etc. can deflect the transmission signal. Here you have to try out and test different routers.

What is a mesh network?
A newer, more powerful technology among the routers is the so-called Mesh WiFi Syetem. In this network there is a router (as a base) and several nodes, also called nodes or satellites, which have a good load distribution over a large area. The information is forwarded from node to node. If every node is connected to every other node, the network is called a fully "meshed" network. This allows you to expand your network with additional mesh-capable devices at will, and if one of your devices fails, data communication is still possible through redirection.

You don't want to do without WLAN on the road?
Either you misuse your smartphone as a hotspot, or you decide to use a mobile WLAN hotspot. To use a mobile hotspot, you need a SIM card from a mobile phone provider. To do this, book your desired data package and insert the card into the device. Get started with your own mobile hotspot. These hotspots or aircards offer WLAN and Internet for up to 20 or more devices simultaneously and up to 1Gbit speed. In our assortment you will find very small portable routers in pocket format (USB stick, dongle), slightly larger ones with an integrated power bank or a touch screen, up to large mobile Internet routers, so that you can also enjoy LTE/4G or 5G at home or e.g. in a holiday home without cable connection.
